This article is for UMix Subscribers whose music mix includes modern rap, hip-hop, and pop, and who want to reduce or eliminate complaints about explicit lyrics in their locations.

The setting that does it is called Do not play clean songs. That name sounds backwards until you know what is behind it, so here is the short version.

However, many of today's songs exist in two versions — an explicit version, and a non-explicit version labeled Clean Version, Radio Edit, or Radio Only Edit. A non-explicit version is the same recording with the explicit words suppressed. No profanity is ever played. But a listener who knows the song will often fill the missing word back in on their own, and then report it as explicit.

1. Open the UMix Dashboard.
2. Go to Settings (under the button showing your initials at the top right).
3. Select the Other tab.
4. Check Do not play clean songs.
5. Click Save Changes.
   

How It Works

When the setting is on, songs that exist as non-explicit versions of an explicit original simply do not play. They are not filtered down or swapped for something else — they are removed from your rotation.

The setting applies to your entire account and to every playlist, and it takes effect immediately. There is nothing to rebuild and nothing to wait for.

Do I Need This?

That is entirely up to you. Two factors are worth weighing:

• How much of your music comes from those genres. These alternate versions are heavily concentrated in modern rap, hip-hop, and pop. The more of that music your mix carries, the more often a non-explicit version will come up.
• Your business's tolerance for what non-explicit versions can prompt. Some operators have no issue with them at all. Others want the question off the table completely.
